Jim Samson joined the staff at Royal Hollowayin 2002 as Professor of Music, having previouslybeen Professor at the Universities of Exeter andBristol. He has published widely (including sevensingle-authored books, and seven edited or co-edited books) on the music of Chopin and on analytical and aesthetic topics in nineteenth- andtwentieth-century mu...sic. He is one of three SeriesEditors of The Complete Chopin: A NewCritical Edition (Peters Edition, in progress). In 1989 he was awarded the Order of Merit.from the Polish Ministry of Culture for his contribution to Chopin scholarship, and in 2000 he was elected a Fellow of the British Academy.  More

There have been numerous collected editions of Chopin's music since his death, and few of them agree on anything. Why is this? The answer lies principally in the complexity of the source tradition, and I include under that heading both manuscript and early printed sources.
